For a while, I taught writing for children on the MAWriting course at Sheffield Hallam University. A large chunk of whatever I know about the craft is set out in my chapter Writing for Children in Steve Earnshaw's book, The Handbook of Creative Writing.

My chapter gives practical help in writing books that, hopefully, children will want to read, and publishers to publish. I look at the genres of baby books and picture books, first story books, longer story books and short novels. There are writing exercises to get you started and discussion of the mysterious and unpredictable children's book industry.

Also in Steve's book is an excellent chapter on writing for teenagers by the famous author Linda Newbery.
